WOMEN
EMPOWERMENT

Women are usually engaged in gathering woods sticks for firing, generating risk of violence and sexual abuse. This routine prevent them from pursuing an education or a source of income. Green’s EMD produces bioethanol that can be used as fuel for clean cookstoves improving the quality of life and work of many women around the world.

INCOME
GENERATION

Green model of business is commited with promoting self-reliance through local income generation.  Farmers increase their sales by supplying the EMD with local varieties of crops; people are trained and employed to operate the EMD; fuel is distributed around the area and sold in the market. This boosts local commerce and brings higher rates of economic return to communities.

JOB
CREATION

Social Bioethanol creates new direct job posts and also triggers further working opportunities in several other sectors. For instance, a 1,000 liters EMD using cassava employs directly circa 40 farmers with two hectars of land each. With Green's EMD local communities can add value to their crops by joining a sustainable production chain.

PRODUCTIVITY

Distillers grains derived from bioethanol production are very rich in protein, vitamins, fat and minerals animals need! Bagasse is an excellent source of protein for animal feeding. If you want to see happy cows and sheep, just give them a little bit of daily bagasse. Vinasse is a fantastic solution for aquaculture and a very beneficial organic fertilizer for crops.

A major concern related to the production of biofuels regards the Food Security dilemma, mainly related to the risk of diverting crops for producing energy instead of its use as food, causing the elevation of its prices and increasing hunger amongst the poorest communities.

Green’s Social Bioethanol is produced in a small-scale, integrated system in which local stakeholders keep the autonomy to manage the production of biofuels and electricity, making sure that a balance between food and fuel is maintained.

We promote a complementary and harmonious approach to energy and food security. Growing crops that provide both food and fuel is one of the best ways to ensure food security and help communities achieving energy autonomy.

Small farmers can raise animals and increase their productivity, while guaranteeing vegetable and animal protein to feed their families. Aided by irrigation systems, made possible by energy access agricultural production is safeguarded all year long.

POLUTION

Indoor air pollution is an extreme problem affecting the lives of billions of people around the world, especially in low-income developing countries. The problem of indoor air pollution is directly related with the use of polluting biomass fuels, like wood and charcoal, for cooking.

This problematic occurs in highly vulnerable areas, where people have no access to more efficient and clean fuels nor to modern cooking equipment. People have to rely on stoves that generate tons of soot trapped inside house buildings and being constantly breath by women while they cook.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) more than 4 million people die each year due diseases caused by household air pollution.. Moreover, carbon emissions from inefficient cooking stoves, alongside other byproducts generated by burning solid fuels, are developing nation’s main contribution to climate change.

Concerned with this sour reality, Green and Project Gaia started building a strong partnership in 2008. Together, we have started implementing a solution for mitigating this harmful problem. Together we promote the use of Bioethanol cookstoves and raise awareness of its benefits.

Green’s micro-distilleries can be adapted to produce different amounts of bioethanol. A microdistillery producing 2.500 liters of ethanol per day can provide fuel for more than 2.000 families with 5 members cooking 3 daily meals while, at the same time, fueling 500 electricity generators.

CO2 EMISSION

Green’s Social Bioethanol is highly efficient: 1 liter of bioethanol produces the same amount of energy than 8 kilograms of wood. It is also non-pollutant and carbon-free, which means that in one year using bioethanol a total of 120 tons of CO2 is prevented of going into the atmosphere.
